How to Prepare and Ship Your Board
The first step to any surfboard shipment is properly packing it to avoid damage. While uShip carriers take great care of your board during transport, it is important to eliminate all risk. To properly protect your surfboard from damage, you will need the following materials:
- A large cardboard box: You will want to locate a box large enough to fit the entire board.
Packing material: Packing material such as old newspaper, bubble wrap, packing peanuts, or foam works great. - Packing tape: Clear packing tape is the best way to go, however, duck tape also works fine.
- Hex wWrench: You will need a hex wrench to remove the fin from the bottom of the board. Hex size will vary.
- Marker: A thick permanent marker is best.
Gather your materials and follow the instructions below to prepare and ship your surfboard:
- Document pre-existing damage: Carefully examine your surfboard for any pre-existing damage. Document any dents, scratches, or blemishes prior to packing it up for shipping.
- Remove fin: Locate the fins at the bottom of your board. Use a hex wrench to remove the screws from the bottom of the surfboard. Finally, gently lift and remove the fins.
- Bubble wrap: Use bubble wrap to protect your board from damage. Wrap the entire surfboard with two layers of bubble wrap. Do not forget the fin – wrap it in bubble wrap as well. For even more protection, complete the process by wrapping the board in an old blanket.
- Prepare Box: Prep the box by placing packing material in the bottom. This allows for cushion prior to placing the board in the box. An inch or two of styrofoam, newspaper, or packing peanuts will do just fine.
- Place board in box: Gently slide your bubble wrapped board inside of the prepped box. Be careful not to tear the cardboard.
- Fill with packing material: Fill the remaining space inside the box with newspaper, packing peanuts, or foam. Do not leave any room for movement.
- Tape and label: Tape the box shut and label as needed – include that the contents of the box are fragile and requires careful handling. Furthermore, you should include which side is to be shipped upright.
