How to Prepare Your Dog for Transport

Whether shipping a dog to another state or across the country, you may need a good kennel, bedding, provisions for food and water, any medications, and it’s best to obtain a health certificate from a vet prior to travel via car or by air.

Many dog shipping professionals have their own kennels, bedding and provisions for food and water, so be sure you check with your transporter to see what is needed. You may also want to include any emergency contact information directly to your carrier. You can prepare your pet for transport by crate training it or taking it on more rides in the car.

How to Ship a Puppy

Puppies need to be at least 10 weeks old and you’ll want to check with the person you’re getting the puppy from to see if you should provide a kennel and bedding, if they will or if you need to ask your puppy transporter to provide these things.

Please keep in mind that uShip does not sell puppies and while we help you find safe transport for your pet, we do not transport the animals ourselves. We advise you review our list of common scams if you believe someone is misleading you.

How to Move with a Dog

As soon as you know you are moving, begin preparing your dog. First, take your dog to a vet for a full checkup and ask for copies of vaccination and other health records. Research the state and city pet regulations for your new home and fulfill those obligations. Verify that your pet has the appropriate identification tags and paperwork necessary to be transferred to a new city or state.

Once your dog is delivered to its new home, you will need to help your pet adjust to the change. Keep your dog confined to a small area of the house until they are ready to explore more. Make sure to surround your pet with familiar objects and people, if possible. It might sound weird, but throw some dirty clothes in their bed or the room they are in to remind a dog they’re home, or get a puppy used to your scent.
